NORMA ELIA CANTÚ

I love you

We don’t know each other.
We’ve never even met,
But I had to write to you
And tell you that I love you.
I love you the way I love sunsets
In Arizona or New Mexico
And on rare evenings in San Antonio
When the sky brightens up persimmon red
And the golden globe sinks on the horizon.

I love you.

I love you the way I love it when parking spaces
Serendipitously open up when I am in a hurry.
I love you the way I love mango and watermelon
On hot summer days—with salt and a little bit of chile.

I love you.

So, even though we have never met,
I just wanted you to know I am here,
Someone who loves you
Unconditionally and totally,
The way pets love, the way strangers love.

I love you.
